KAGV Big Lake AK -1110

The 5th of January -11 was a fantastic date with low noise and many exotic signals. At local lunchtime the signals was still present and a lot of Alaskan and a few Hawaiians was heard here in Möklinta.
As late as 1400 local time the signal of KAGV came up over the noisefloor with a beutiful ID as " You´re listen to KAGV 11-10 -Alaskas Gospel Voice, broadcasting from Houston, Alaska and licensed by the Federal Communications Commission as KAGV Big Lake" .
Have tried to get the station verified erlier with no sucess, but today I saw my friend Hans Ostnell received a letter from Interim Station Manager, Brian Blair. A email together with my recording was sent and only a few hours later Brian verified my reception after listening to my mp3 recording.
KAGV is a christian station serving the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys with their 10kW transmitter since the summer of 2002. The Cities Houston and Big Lake have about a population of 2500 each. The nearest larger city is Anchorage, about 60 miles away, or about 15 min by plane !

WIRL Peoria IL -1290

This is one of my favourite frequencys, often bubbling of signals. The 16th of december was a date when conditions favoured the midwest and I noticed the classic country music when scanning thru the band. Between the songs IDs and jingles with a patriotic appearance as "Proud to be an American - we´re 12-90 WIRL"
Peoria with a population of 115 000 has become famous as a representation of the average American city because of its demographics and its perceived mainstream midwestern culture. The question "Will it play in Peoria" has become a metaphor for whether something appeals to the american mainstream public. The saying was popularized by movies with Groucho Marx which I suppose many have seen in the past.

Hosanna Manantial, La Chorrera -1580

During this season and last season I have been watching this frequency carefully when other Panama stations been heard. A few times I have had a trace of an unidentified religious station at the same time but never been able to get any identifiable info from the programs. But, the morning of 23rd December last year during good Panaman conditions I found a very offset signal on the frequency, 1579,894. The signal was quite strong with non-stop music. After a few songs the announcement " Feliz navidad te desea Hosanna Manantial 15-80 AM" came out of the speaker. Had to contact Henrik Klemetz to have him confirm that I heard what I heard, thanks HK! Today I received a nice letter from Fundacion CFC Manantial de Vida :

The station started its transmissions in 2002 when the church complex was built in La Chorrera, a city about 50km southwest of the capital of Panamá.
To my knowledge the station haven´t been heard here in Sweden (or scandinavia) before but maybe some adjustments been done as I´ve heard them again the 30th of January this year.

WAOS Austell GA -1600

A few times this season I have seen information about WAOS being on daytime power thru the night. The 15th and 16th of January must have been such nights as I catched them thru the powerhouse WUNR on 1600kHz. Many "La Mejor" between the mexican songs and a TOH ID was heard as "WAOS Austell Atlanta - WXEM Buford - WLBA Gainesville , La Mejor .....Radio Network". When looking for them , be aware that also WUNR have mexican programs where they announces as "Radio Mexico".
WAOS is serving the latino comunity of Atlanta since 22 years. The city is known for brands as The Coca Cola Company and Ted Turners CNN. The city of licence, Austell, with about 5000 citizens lies 10 miles west of Atlanta near the huge theme park Six flags over Georgia.

Radio Agricultura del Peru "La Peruanísima",Lima -1590

At the midnight peak ,January7th, it suddenly were Peruvians with good strengths at the top of the band here in Möklinta. Due to the closure of the german DRM transmitter on 1593, could the signals of "La Peruanísima" be received with its sharp audio. Have heard them long time ago, think it was in the late 90´s, but never received an QSL then. But today I was lucky to receive a letter from Franklin Gambini, Jefe de Operaciones, confirming my reception.
Lima and the urban areas covers about 800sq.km with a population of over 7,6 million people, is located at the pacific coast up thru the river valleys of Chillón,Rímac and Lurín.

A quite regular guest on the frequency with mostly conservative talk hosts and news. The station began broadcasting 1922, at that time licensed to Newark NJ but later changed to New York City in the 40´s.
Celibrates its 90th birthday this month!

WMSA Massena NY -1340

The 16th of January I had some exceptional conditions towards the northern part of the state of New York. First I heard WSLB on 1400kHz in the neighboring town Ogdensburg with good strengh. After searching the band I found a very weak but clear signal on 1340kHz. The TOH ID was barely audible, but luckily it contained both the location and slogan as " 13-40 WMSA Massena´s News and Information station"
The station transmits with only 910Watts day and night making them a small station with local flavour of the programs.

Massena is situated along the St Lawrence River and the border US and Canada, called "The gateway to America´s Fourth Coast" because the connection thru locks to the five Great Lakes.

The station was heard a few days in late September -11 with announcements like "Finger Lakes Radio" and "Finger Lakes Country - WFLR" . The station has only 442W at nights but can still be heard from time to time. The big challange is to overcome the signals from CJLV on the same QRG.

Dundee is located between Keuka and Seneca Lakes, two out of ten finger shaped lakes in the region below Lake Ontario. With a population of aprox. 1800 the countryside is reminiscent of the Scottish highlands.

During the season, I have several times heard a weak station here with NOS format who do not have TOH ID´s or news in the morning hours. But the 31st of December I finally catched an ID as " 13-40 WROD Daytona Beach" after Roy Orbisons Pretty Woman.
Kevin Geddings, GM and morning host confirmed my reception today with a short email. This became my MW QSL # 18 from Florida!

Daytona Beach dubbed as "Worlds most famous beach" is historically known for their hard packed sandbeaches that allowed motorsport races for over 50 years. In the end of the 50´s the beach course was replaced by the Daytona International Speedway , famous for "Daytona 500" and Bikeweek that attract hundreds of thousands visitors each year.

WOFX Troy NY -980

This station is a very rare guest on the frequency, you have to get past the 5-6 of the most common first to hear them.
The 24th of October -11 was probably one of the best mornings for the season with many unusual signals popping up in the band from the east coast US. At 7 o´clock they was on top with"The Capital Region´s sport station WOFX Troy, WGY HD2 Albany - Fox Sports 9-80, an Iheart radio station"
Paul Ihandler, Program Dir. confirmed my reception today and writes : "We get a number of reports from your part of the world - and I can say yours is certainly one of the most distant DXs in quite a while!"
Troy is known as the Collar City due to its history of shirt,collar and other textile production. Located upstate N.Y. just north of Albany, on the eastern bank of Hudson River.The town was actually named after a vote of the people back in 1791.
It is also a well known fact that the "Uncle Sam" name came right from here. It goes all the way back to the war of 1812 when troops were receiving barrels of meat with a big US stamp on them. Those barrels were coming from Troy meat packer Sam Wilson.
The troops quickly began using the nickname "Uncle Sam" when they talked about who they were getting the food from, because of the stamp.

WHSR Pompano Beach FL -980

This station is very difficult to hear and even more difficult to get an ID from. Heard french or is it haitian(?) a few times in September and October 2011, but the 24th October I finally nailed them with a call ID and "Radio Haiti Amerique International". Several other unusual Florida stations came thru this morning as WAOC-1420, WAMT-1190 and WMYR -1410.
They Serves the Haitian and Pakistan/Indian/Bangladesh commuinties in the neighborhood but also have some Italian programs.

XECTL Radio Chetumal -860

After trying many times I succeeded at last to hear this station the 24th of October 2011. The station was suddenly loud and clear with " escuche te XECTL Radio Chetumal con 10 000 watts de potencia efectiva transmitiendo de la capital del estado del frontera caribe de..." a few minutes and then suddenly faded away.
I´ve only heard them once more a few weeks later so its a exotic catch for me.
The station is situated just north of the Belize border, in the the Mexican Quintana Roo state. It was founded in 1985 and serving regions in both countries

Radio Fórmula Mexico -970, -1470, -1500

The 13th of November 2010 I had some fantastic signals from a few mexicans and one of them that I heard for the first time this morning was XERFR Radio Fórmula -970 with its TOH ID as "escuche Radio Fórmula, Groupo fórmula presente..." . This is their Primera Cadena of three channels. A few days later, 17th of Nov. I also got nice call ID of XEAI R Fórmula Tercera Cadena -1470 and XEDF R Fórmula Segunda Cadena -1500. These station are the core of a big network of stations in Mexico. A fourth "cadena" is also established by stations in US.
I got a mail today from José Pablo Cabello, VP Fórmula Digital y Comercial verifying all three stations.

Farmville is 20km west of Grenville with a population of about 4500. The station is named after ECU-East Carolina University´s team "Pirates"

WARR Warrenton NC -1520

In december 2010 I experienced several nights when daytimer stations were heard just before closing time. WARR was one of those that I caught with closing procedure in the evening 9th of Dec. With address, ph nr and nice ID´s I tried several times to get them verified with no luck. A few days ago I discovered that they had a new website and contact address. Tried again and Dr. Lilipiana D. Darensburg , Pres. swiftly replied with a nice verie letter .They have 5kW daytime non-directional signal.
Warrenton is a small town with a population of nearly 1000 situated along the major routes of Interstate 85 and the historic U.S. Highway 1.

CKNB Campbellton NB -950

The station often produce strong signals towards Scandinavia . I heard them one evening with enjoyable music in the beginning of January and decide to write them a letter, not the first time I must admit...Surprised to receive a short QSL letter from G.M. David Montgomery the same night.
Campbellton is situated on the bank of Restigouche river opposite of Point-á-la-Croix , Quebec with a population of 7400. Forestry and tourism are the major industries here.

WCCW Traverse City MI -1310

I have searched for the station many times but the powerhouses CIWW and WLOB effectively blocks the frequency. After erecting a new beverageantenna in a slightly westerly path I suceeded catching the signals the 12th of january with a "13-10 ESPN Radio WCCW Traverse City" ID. My v/s Brian R. Dale, Op Mgr tells me it was easy to confirm my report as it was his voice I´ve had recorded! He´s a big Detroit Red Wings fan and appreciate the influx of Swedish players in the team.
Located at the shore of Lake Michigan with a population of 15 000, but the surrounding micropolitan area has about 150 000 in total. The City and Bay is named after 18th century French voyager who made la grande traverse or "the long crossing" across the mouth of the Grand Traverse Bay. The area is also the largest producer of tart sherries in US and the home of National Cherry Festival attracting 500 000 visitors annually!

One of the regular visitors with talk on 960kHz. Often with ID as "News and Opinions for the Champlain Valley This is Today´s Talk WEAV Plattsburgh - Burlington The Zone 9-60 AM". A Fox News station. Sent them a reception report a few weeks ago and got a short verie-letter from Jamie W Dennis, Program Director.
The town is located on the western shore of Lake Champlain near the Adriondack Mountains, home to approx. 19 000 people. Just a ferry ride to Vermont or about 45 min to Montreal,Canada.
In Adriondack Mountains you can also find Lake Placid, the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.

Have searched for this station many mornings without luck, but in the morning 22nd of October -11 the conditions favored the Dominican Republic for a few minutes and I caught a nice top of the hour ID.
A reception report was sent away but no luck with QSL´ing. After a contact with my friend Gert Nilsson he helped me with a valid address. Only minutes later I had a nice verie letter from Ana Maria Fernández in my inbox. Many Thanks Gert!
Monte Cristi is located approx. 135km west of Puerto Plata, sits among desert-like surroundings on the northwestern tip of Dom. Rep. Distance to Haiti is about 35km.

WLMC Georgetown SC -1470

I have heard this station a few times this season around my local midnight with its soul music. The 31st of Dec they surfaced again with it short TOP ID as "WLMC Georgetown" . Ron Stalvey, G.M. of the station replied a few days later with a short email.
Georgetown has a population of 9000 and is the second largest seaport in S.C., handling over 960 000 tons of materials a year.

WKVQ Eatonton GA -1540

DX Test! I had read in the DX magazines about the test and decided to give it a try. Arrived at the frequency a few minutes after 07 UTC, 31st of Dec -11 where CHIN was very powerful with a relay of China Radio Int´s very nice program "The Shuffle". After a few minutes of listening I suddenly heard the wobbling and sweep tones breaking thru CHIN´s program. Also later the CW ID´s was heard and at 0725 audio was coming thru where the stations postal address was read !
Sent Craig Baker, the owner, a email and he swiftly verified my reception report 6 min later. My first participation in a DX Test became a SUCESS!!
The town, Eatonton in the Putnam County is known as "Dairy capital of Georgia" in honor of its major industry, Dairy farming. Has a population of 6500. Lake Oconee and Sinclair enclose the community on the east, while the Oconee National Forest shades the west.

The evening 14th of December -11 was a date with many early thrilling signals from ECNA. On 1230 there was a NOS station and I stop and waited for the usual one, WSBB to identify. Surprised when the TOH ID heard was "This is AM 12-30 WFAS White Plains - Westchester´s Soft Favorites, A Cumulus Station".
The station was heard also the following evening although a bit weaker.
White Plains -"The Birthplace of the state of N.Y." is located between Hudson River and Long Island Sound in Westchester County, an affluent suburban county that is home to almost 1 million people, just north of New York City.

with a beautiful top of the hour ID. Not easy to get the station verified but a few days ago C.E Jason Josselyn replied with a most welcomed verie letter. My 47th verified State!
The City is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, north of Shelburne Bay. Has a population of aprox. 39 000.
Since the time of the Iroquois, people along Lake Champlain have reported seeing a monster in it. Modern American call it "Champ" and their opinions about it tend to fall into one of two camps: either it´s a prehistoric whale, or more probably it´s a log....anyway the local minor league baseball team is now named the "Vermont Lake Monsters" in honor of the creature!

The 24th of October 2011 was a exciting day with many signals especially from Florida but also the whole eastern coast up to the Canadian border. Only Delaware was missing from the costal states that was heard this night.
The station peaked at 07UT with a nice ID as "wtsnam1270.com - Number One for News, Talk and Sports"
Dover is a city with population of 30 000 , nicknamed as "The Garrison City". A Garrison is style of house, typically two stories with the second-story overhanging in the front. Perhaps a legacy of the Swedish settlers as the same types of houses but smaller can be found in Dalarna and Varmland,Sweden?

One of my favorite frequency that often acts as a bubbling pot of stations. This time, the morning of New Years Eve 2011 I caught an ID as "AM 12-90 and now 95.7 FM Newstalk Radio WHIO - The Home of Fox News" My v/s Nick Roberts tells that they have 5000Watts directional to the north at nights, the reason that the signals reach us well here in Sweden.
Dayton, the "Gem City" is located in the south of Ohio with about 140 000 habitants. Known for Aerospace and Defense Industry. The Wright Brothers was born here, Orville and Willbur, who invented and build the first successful aeroplane

WOND Pleasantville NJ -1400

A frequency that 99 times of 100 are occupied by WBBR in my QTH. At last I had luck the 6th of January 2011 when WBBR faded enough to let a top of the hour ID slide thru as "WDFN -WDFN Detroit - The Fan"
Detroit - The Motor City , is also the birthplace for Motown Records.
As WDFN is a sports station my veriesigner Michael McCoy writes in his letter: "I have 3 girls as well ages 11, 8 and 4…. I am teaching them to appreciate your country’s contribution to our hockey team. We used to have the Russian 5, now it’s all about the Swedes:

Not a everyday guest on the frequency but when they arrive they often posess a strong signal. This morning , the 13th of November -11, they had companion with a few mexican signals on the band. The program "Al ritmo de la noche" make me stop and listen to the rythmical tunes.
Located in the center of the country as the slogan says, "La Reina Radial del Centro", Santa Clara is the place for the last battle in the Cuban Revolution back in 1958.

Situated in the southeastern part of Cuba and named after the founder Garcia Holguín, an Spanish military officer back in 1545. From the hill Loma de la Cruz, where a large crucifix is installed, which can be ascended by its 450 stairs, one can see the whole city.

After ignoring Cuban stations for more than 25 years I tried to get a few verified last month, I reported Radio
Ciudad de la Habana -820/980 and Periodista Arienna Rodriguez swiftly replied and verified my reception report. She was surprised of the strong signals towards Sweden as she had received other reports last week. The transmitter on 980kHz is probably R COCO with night relay of Ciudad.

KKXA Snohomish WA -1520

The station came thru when the cx turned to the west on the morning 30th of October. With C&W music its easy to recognize.
The name originates from Snohomish tribe and means wet snow according to the last chief of the tribe. Located on Pudget Sound between Skagit County to the north and Kings County (Seattle) to the South. On the east it is bordered by the crestline of the North Cascades, a beautiful mountain range.

WAMT Pine Castle FL -1190

The station was surprisingly heard in mid October together with the powerhouse WLIB on the freqcuency. ESPN Deportes but with spanish call-ID "WAMT Once noventa" on top of the hour. The station is located in the outskirts of Orlando in Orange County, and as my veriesigner Jerry Smith writes, the two tower array located in a very very wet swampy area south of Orlando. The station has only 230W at nights but as Jerry told me they were at full daytime power of 4,7kW non-directional due to a remote control failure at the transmitter site.

In october last year I was very surprised one morning when a Gospel station took over the QRG and IDed as "we are Mobiles...13-60 WMOB Mobile"
The stations antenna pattern had been twisted due to two large industrial buildings that were built in the vincinity and weakened their signal. Fortunately for us DXers, but the owner Buddy Tucker shortly became irritated by all reception reports and decided to stop the QSLing.
Some time ago I got an answer from Jackie Harrell at the station who verified that it was Buddy himself on my recording I had enclosed.
My 46th State verified!
Mobile is located on the gulfcoast of US and is the third most populous city in Alabama with its 200 000 habitants. The town is the birthplace of Marti Gras and has the oldest celibration, dating to the early 18th century during the French colonial period

WUNO San Juan PR -630

WUNO became an easy catch when NRK closed erlier this year, often heard in early mornings with its Contacto NotiUno programs. With 5kW and located on the northern coast the signals has no problems traveling to Sweden.

The station is quite regular when the cx turns towards the great lakes. Situated between Lake Huron and Lake Eire the town can have quite treacherous winter conditions with blizzards and very low temperatures.
The area offers excellent fishing, golfing, hiking trails skiing and of course snowmobiling.
The station started as early as 1926 , owned by Blackburn Radio Inc. who also owns CHOK-1070 and ten other FM stations around southern Ontario.

KSJB Jamestown ND -600

600kHz is a frequency usually occupied by CBC´s outlet in St Anthony NL. But in the morning of 9th of November 2009, yes the same date as KEYZ-660 was heard, there was a C&W station going up and down thru the noisefloor. At last there was a break in the music and call ID for "KSJB Jamestown North Dakota" was heard. Op Mgr/Program Dir Jarrett Stevens verifies my reception report. He also do the morningshow at the FM outlet KISS 99.3.
Jamestown -"The Buffalo City" in southeastern part of the state has about 15000 habitants and is the home for world´s biggest Buffalo statue. Agriculture is the main industry.
Alf Clausen was raised here, the composer of many episodes of "The Simpsons" and movies like Moonlightning and Naked Gun.

Bruce writes he understand our hobby and the excitement of receiving stations around the world as his father was a DXer when he was young. With their 5kW they cover northwestern part of North Dakota some parts of Montana and Canada from Williston. Serves the listeners with news,farm and ranch reports and market information, all mixed up with beutiful Country and Western music.

WRVA Richmond VA -1140

The 25th of January this year I had a pipeline of signals from Virginia. First I noticed WHKT -1650 with almost Q5 signals, on 1370 the pearl WSHV South Hill came thru with its slogan "Soul of the Southside". After a hint from my friend Torolf Johnsson I then found on 1140 " Your news weather and ...station, this is 50 000 watts...WRVA Richmond" A long sought-after station finally captured!
The station has a long history and was the city´s first radiostation back in 1925. Richmond, the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia with a population 1.2 million is situated at James River which forms in the Appalachian Mountains.
The station is not an easy catch, due to CBI and WQBA that often occupies the QRG.

WPLM Plymouth MA - 1390

One early night in the end of August I heard a different voice on the frequency. I stopped scanning around when Delilah presented a love song and gave ID for the station as "WPLM and WPLM-FM". Sometimes they use their slogan "Easy 99.1" also here on 1390 when not carrying their usual business format Money Matters radio.
Located in Plymouth on the Atlantic coast come 45miles south of Boston and as my v/s Alan W.Anderson, G.M. writes: "The Pilgrims landed here in 1620, and we now proudly boast being America´s hometown" !

WIZZ Greenfield MA -1520 kHz

In the evening 12th of December 2010 the MW band opened up early enough for Daytimer hunting. On 1520 kHz there was a NOS station instead of the usual Buffalo powerhouse,WWKB. After a few minutes the c/d procedure started with some nice ID´s and promo for upcoming programs.
Greenfield is located in Pioneer Valley at the northeastern part of the state between Connecticut river and the Berkshire foothills. Has about 18000 residents and is known for its picturesque and vibrant downtown. The town is living up to its "green" name by construction of a giant 2.0MW solar farm this summer. It will supply half of the city-owned facilities with electricity.

WCMC Wildwood NJ-1230

The station has been heard a few times this season already, first the 25th of august when I caught a Top of the hour ID as "WCMC Wildwood" and two days later with " ..Jesrey shore...broadcasting from .....the capital of America and now from Cape May town on AM 12-30 - Oldies 12-30 WMID" The reason is that they simulcast with the sisterstation WMID -1340.
Wildwood/ Cape May is located on the southernmost tip of New Jersey with the Delaware bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The area is famous for their seaside resorts and should also be a terrific place for DXing the european MW band

WMTR Morristown NJ -1250

The reception of this station is a typical Grayzone-DX enhancement. It was heard August 27th during the last minutes before the station changed to its night time antenna pattern, when they have almost no signal towards Scandinavia. The daytime antenna pattern has a better coverage towards northeast but with 2 kW lower power.
The signal was very weak but with a distinct ID as " 12-50 WMTR Morristown" I sent the recording to Program Director Chris Edwards who verified my reception today.A nice opening of the new season!

CBG Gander NL-1400

this station is like a lighthouse in the AM band, always there when its open towards the northwesten hemisphere. I noted the station some days ago with a new type of local ID, "CBC Radio One 1400 AM in Gander". I sent Maureen Anonsen a reception report which was verified swiftly.
Gander is located on the northeastern part of the Island of Newfoundland and has a population of aprox. 10000 habitants. Gander was actually first an military airport that was built during the second world war where a town started to develop around. The airport later became Gander International Airport. It was used as a refuelling stop for atlantic flights in many years until the newer long-range aircrafts hit the market.

Forest FM,Verwood - 92.3 MHz

The 8th of July there was some Italians in the lower part of the band but only the usual big networks. During the evening I wasn´t able to DX live, therefore I tuned my SB920 to a free QRG and pressed the recording button.

Later in the night when I arrive home there was a pleasant surprise in my recording. A few minutes after 7 o´clock BBC R 3 came in and a little bit later I heard a commercial with ph nr indicating Dorset. The station went away but only to reappear 2 minutes later with a nice ID as "Forest FM" by the announcer Laura Jerome.

The station is a small non-profit community Radio Station in Verwood, Dorset staffed primarily by volunteers. With the low power of only 25Watts, this is my best FM catch from England.

Station Mgr Steve Saville answered my reception report and he´s a former FMDXer!! Heres what he wrote:

I must admit I have been a DX'er in the past and I have often heard Swedish stations on FM here in the UK during Sporadic E sessions. Also Spanish and Eastern European stations. We also get French radio and TV regularly via tropospheric lifts.

Radijo Stotis Lietus "In The Rain" , Klapeida -103.7MHz

In the morning 10th of July there was a slight tropo opening towards the southeast of Sala. On 103.7 the Klapedian station R Stotis Lietus came in a few minutes with some comercials and a jingle ID. Lithuania is the most difficult to catch country of the Baltics here in Sala. A reception report yesterday was directly answered by the staff in Lithuanian. Thanks god for the google translation service !

Lor´FM, Landres - 97,2 MHz

During my first real eskip for the season of 2010 I stumbled across this French station in the evening 1st of June. Its located in the northeastern part of France, near the borders of Belgium and Luxembourg. With the distance of 1430km a little shorter eskip than usual.

WPMP Pascagoula,MS-1580kHz

This was a big surprise when it came thru the morning 8th of November 2009. According to the new owner it couldn´t been on daypower because the highpower transmitter had failed then, so with 51 Watt nighttime power it is quite a catch! Big thanks to Torolf J who also heard them the same morning and OJS who found out the email address. The date was one of the better mornings that season with wide cx from east to the west and south.
Pascagoula -Mississippi´s Flagship City, is located at the coastline just 15km from the Alabaman stateline. The name Pascagoula is a Mobilian Jargon term meaning "bread eaters". It is taken from a group of native americans found in the villages along the Pascagoula River back in the sixteenth century.
The station has now a new call, WPMO, and transmits in parallell with its daytimer station on 1440,WVGG.

HOQ62 Radio Ritmo Stereo, Chitré -890kHz

Near the end of the sunrise conditions the 26th of March this station came up with a few nice ID´s and mentions of its FM QRG 97.5. The town is located on the Pacific Ocean side of the country near the gulf of Panama. Named after the native tribe Chitra and the population is about 45000.

Jazz Radio, Corse -88,7 MHz

The 1st of June-10 I had the first better e-skip conditions last season. From Turkey to France from mid-day to the evening. At 1452 I had a station with soul and jazz music in and out on 88,7MHz with french. After a few minutes I caught a short ID from one of the two Jazz R transmitters on the island of Corse. There is one in Bastia beaming its signal south and the other in Ghisoni in the middle of the island beaming its power north-northwest, which was probably the one that I heard.
A nice letter and verification came today from Cédric Badet, the engineer of the station who also enclosed cov-maps and a picture of the station

CKGM Montréal QC -990kHz

Montreal's English-language sports station The Team 990 can
sometimes be heard with a great strengths although it is on a European QRG. The most common NA station here in central Sweden is probably CBY Corner Brook NL, but when the condition are moving a little further inland they pop up frequently with their "Montreal Sports Authority, The Team   9-90AM"
I heard them in the morning December 12th  last year with strong signals and all alone on the frequency.

Arctic Radio Morokulien - 1584kHz

In december 2009 Arctic Radio Club arranged an special transmission from the border village Morokulien .
The village is located at the Swedish-Norwegian border and in 1910 the Nordic Peace Congress decided to raise a peace monument here to celibrate 100 years of peace between the countries.
V/s was my friend Bengt Ericsson that personally handed over the QSL at the Arctic Radio Clubs yearly meeting in Halmstad last weekend!

WEZS Laconia NH 1350kHz

I heard the station a few times in October and December 2010 just before the top of the hour with its slogan and ID "WEZS Laconia- Oldies 1350"
Laconia - "City of the Lakes" with its 15000 habitants is located between Lake Winnisquam and Winnipeasukee in the middle of the State.
Veriesigner Gary Hammond told me he recognized the top-of-the-hour ID voiced by Don Bishop, a west coast voice talent who records all of their station ID´s.
The station is one of the very few remaining independenly owned and operated stations in the state.
He has also received a number of reception reports from Norway and Finland, often from the last few minutes of daypower operation.

Radio Onda Cero, Chamaca - Cusco Dept. 1640kHz

A station that has been more or less common during the last weeks excelent conditions towards Peru. Torolf Johnsson was the first to find the station and there has been a long period of researching to reveal the location of the station, mostly done by Henrik Klemetz as usual !
David Torres Boza who answered my reception report (thanks Fredrik Dourén for contact info) writes that Chamaca is a small village with about 500 habitants at the altitude of 3800 meters above sea level.

The dominant peruvian station on the frequency easy to recognize with its sharp audio . I heard them with strong signals at sunrise the 26 March.

Cajamarca is a town and province with the same name located in the northwestern part of Peru. Here was the last Ruler of the Inca Empire, Athahualpa, captured by the Spainards . A randsom (a room filled with gold) was paid by the Incas but he was killed anyway....

A few weeks ago I was informed that there was a new Peruvian on air on 1240kHz with a exotic name. Fredrik Dourén and Torolf Johnsson was the first to hear them and a few days later I also catched them with ID just before c/d at 0303UTC.
Pachatusán is with its height of 4900 meters one of five mountains surrounding the city of Cusco and got its name from the Quechua word translated into spanish means "He who holds the world".

OAU2M Radio Layzon, Cajamarca -1170

At saturday morning, 26th March 2011, I had a strong sunrise peak towards the Cajamarca region of Peru. Strong signals at many frequencies. With the Perseus I captured a number of interesting signals and the most unexpected was Radio Layzon, Cajamarca, which went through the Europeans with a relatively sharp sound and the typical Andean music. Several Cajamarca mentions in the talk and later an echoing announcement as "Layzon-Layzon-Layzon" fixed the identity. Fredrik Dourén - FD,Borlänge also caught them the same time.
Grimaneza Ortiz, Gerente de la Radio verified my reception report and asked me why not also listening to their FM transmitter 90.5.....? :-)

OAX4U Radio Cielo, Lima -1010

The station appeared at the morning peak of 18th of March 2011 when a small rush towards Peru with the most common 5-6 stations. The station gave several IDs which I had at first a bit difficult to decipher, but with the help of my friend Torolf-TJ it was fixed .

Raúl Adolfo Arias Ramos confirmed quickly my reception report via email. The station broadcasts with 10kW from Lima, but is not very common most time of the year, best chances we have in April and May.

In late October 2010 I started to watch the silent hour of Luxembourg -1440 on the night to see if anything interesting would pop up. Just a few nights later there was a big surprise when some gospel music showed up on the frequency followed by the announcement "... more news with Wayne Thomas heard 25 past each hour on WZYX"Probably a day/night switch power failure which resulted in the fun log.

October 1st 2010 it was again interesting cx with south Florida stations on several frequencies.

At 670kHz a weak "La Poderosa" was heard (WWFE) under the strong Cuban.

When I went up to 710kHz the Cuban was significantly QRMed by another SS talker which turned ouot to be Radio Mambi with this TOH ID:

"Radio Mambi-WAQI Miami Ft Lauderdale - Radio Mambi

Broadcasting. Radio Mambi La Grande 710 onda media. La emisora más Potente del sur de Florida. Transmitiendo con ... noche el sur de Florida,Cuba y el Caribe ... " was heard as a combined EE / SS identification.

Was listening to 1420kHz at the top of the hour the 5th of October 2010 and was suprised when the usual troika (WOC-KTOE-CKDY) didn´t occupy the frequency. Instead the announcement "...AM that really talks AM 14-20 WBEC Pittsfield " was heard.
The city is located in the western Massachusetts near the border of N.Y. The city with its 46000 inhabitants hold three AM stations and WBEC -Berkshire Eagle Radio is the most common here in Sweden.

The morning of October 3rd, 2009 goes down in history as a fantastic morning towards Ecuador. The whole mediumwave band was bubbling of signals from the country for about an hour around my local sunrise.At 1530 kHz I had a weak signal that caught my attention at the top of the hour, A swich sound effect followed by "Ondas Cañaris" call made my day !
Dr. José Antonio Ocampo Robles, Locutor-Periodista verified my report and says that he works Monday-Saturday 18-24 with the program Sinfonía, where he plays romantic music from 60´s , 70´s and 80´s.

WMIA Radio Arecibo PR -1070

A station that has received many reports over the years from me without the slightest hint of an answer , but today Mr. Nestor Gonzalez on WMIA Arecibo radio suprised me with a nice QSL. Nestor is a technician and also a radio amateur with the call WP4NTO. He also reveals that he practices good old DX with his father now and then!
The city of Arecibo is located on the north coast of Puerto Rico and it takes its name from the Indian chief Jamaica AraciboProbably most known for the Radio Observatory with its 305feet in diameter large satellite dish.

WDZY Colonial Heights VA -1290

1290kHz is a real hornet's nest when you talk about TA stations. The last two seasons, I've logged no fewer than 12 stations from NA here in Möklinta, the latest of which was heard on 12th December. An excellent day for DaytimerDX and several signals were noted before 21UTC. Just after the TOH I heard a nice Radio Disney call, the only one possible this early hour is WDZY Richmond VA on the frequency.Laura Haemker-Stn Manager - was the one who answered swiftly.
